Archpriest Dr. Michael Herrick

Archpriest Dr. Michael Herrick, 85, fell asleep in the Lord after a brief illness at Saint Vincent Hospital here on Sunday, March 29, 2015.

Born June 4, 1929 in Evanston, IL, the son of Myron Dalbert and Lilla [Crittenton] Herrick, Sr., he married the former Valerie Writer in 1959.  He received his undergraduate degree in Latin, Ancient Greek and Hebrew from Southern Methodist University; his M.Div. from Nashotah House, Nashotah, WI; and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Kansas.

After spending 27 years ministering as an Episcopalian priest, he embraced Orthodox Christianity in the mid-1980s.  Following his ordination to the Orthodox priesthood, he was assigned as the first resident priest at Saint Matthew Mission, Green Bay, WI on July 1, 1992, which he faithfully served for over a decade.  In addition to his pastoral ministry, he worked as a psychologist in the local state maximum security prison.

In addition to his wife, Matushka Valerie, Father Michael is survived by his children and their spouses, Michael and Jessica Herrick, Grand Junction, CO; Chris and Susan Herrick, Topeka, KS; and Harold and Akemi Herrick, Gambrills, MD; three grandchildren; two brothers; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Visitation will begin at Saint Matthew Church, 607 Ravenswood Drive, Green Bay, at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, April 1.  A Panikhida will be celebrated at 5:00 p.m., followed by the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts at 6:00 p.m.  Visitation will resume at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, followed by the Funeral Service for a Priest at 10:00 a.m.  His Grace, Bishop Paul of Chicago and the Midwest will officiate.  Interment will take place in Kansas at a later date.  A mercy meal will follow in the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Father Michael’s name and may be sent to Saint Matthew Church, 607 Ravenswood Drive, Green Bay, WI 54302.
