Archpriest Jon Sfera, retired pastor of Holy Cross Romanian Orthodox Church here, fell asleep in the Lord on Thursday, August 22, 2013.
Born on September 12, 1947, in Marghita, Yugoslavia, Father Jon was educated in Yugoslavia and Romania. He completed studies at the Theological Seminary in Sremski Karlovci, Yugoslavia in 1968 and at the Theological Institute in Sibiu, Romania four years later.
In 1976, he married the former Petra Boronka, and in the same year was ordained to the diaconate and priesthood by His Eminence, Metropolitan Nestor of Craiova. He served parishes in Alibunar, Serbia (1976-1977) and Toracul Mare (Begejci), Yugoslavia (1977-1990). After he and his family’s arrival in the US in 1990, he was appointed pastor of Holy Cross Church, which he faithfully served until his retirement in 2011. In addition to his beloved wife, Preoteasa Petra, he Is survived by a son, Priest Silvius and family, and a daughter, Silvia and family.
On Wednesday, August 28, a Wake Service (Saracusta) will be held at Holy Cross Romanian Orthodox Church, 6232 Fillmore St, Hollywood FL 33024 at 7 pm. Thursday, August 29, Divine Liturgy at 8 am, followed by Funeral Service for a Priest starting at approximately 10:00 am.
