Archbishop Gregory (Afonsky) Undergoes Successful Surgery

His Eminence, Archbishop GREGORY, retired Bishop of Sitka and Alaska, underwent surgery at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan on Thursday, September 10, 1998.

According to Protopresbyter Robert S. Kondratick, Chancellor of the Orthodox Church in America, Archbishop GREGORY’S surgery was completed around 7:00 p.m. EDT. Doctors reported that the Archbishop’s vital signs, including blood pressure, were good and that he was in no immediate danger.

Archbishop GREGORY suffered three heart attacks between September 6 and 8. The first occurred during a private visit to friends on Staten Island, after which he was hospitalized. On September 8 he was transferred to Saint Vincent’s.

“We are confident that, with the ongoing prayers and concern offered by Orthodox Christian faithful throughout North America, His Eminence will face a full and complete recovery,” said Father Kondratick upon learning of the successful procedure.
