Parish Background

Early in September 2000, a group of about 20 Orthodox faithful in the Raleigh,  North Carolina area were given a blessing by His Eminence Archbishop DMITRI to start a new parish; he approved the parish’s name and assigned Fr Edward Rommen as our priest.  After a brief time meeting at the Holiday Inn in Cary, we found and rented space in a light industrial complex. With the enthusiastic help of our members, that warehouse was transformed into a place of worship. With the help of a 3-year church planting grant, we were “up and running” by the beginning of 2001.

After only one year, we rented the adjoining unit in our building.  Financially independent and still growing, by January 2004 the parish offered a full cycle of services with an average attendance of about seventy at Sunday Liturgy.

By the beginning of 2005, we were once again outgrowing our facilities.  In spite of considerable effort, we could not find affordable property to build a new temple. However, we did find a church building for rent and decided to take advantage of this opportunity. In June 2006 we signed a lease and started renovations and began church services at our new location in July.  Three years later, on August 27, 2009 we purchased the church and property.

Fr Edward retired on Forgiveness Sunday 2017, and the following week Fr Patrick Pulley served his first liturgy as the rector of Holy Transfiguration.  Our parish has continued to flourish under his shepherding.  We have an average Sunday attendance of about 130, four full children’s church school classes, a women’s Sisterhood, regular men’s nights, adults education classes, and a robust choir.  Now, in 2023, after over ten years of searching, HTOC recently purchased property a short distance away from our current location and is beginning the process of designing and building a new temple.

Thanks to the prayers, dedication and hard work of our parishioners who made this possible, we look forward to the continued growth of Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church to the glory of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
