FOCA authorizes married student housing project

On September 1, 2007, the Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America [FOCA], meeting at their 81st annual national convention here, authorized the initiation of an estimated $1.9 million major capital campaign for the construction of married student housing at Saint Tikhon’s Seminary, South Canaan, PA.

The housing complex, to be built at Saint Tikhon’s, would consist of three buildings each containing four condos. Additionally, the designs include open space basements intended to provide common use space.

The project recognizes that the majority of new seminarians are married with families and in need of affordable housing.

“By providing this resource, we are assisting those who will become the future spiritual leaders of our Church,” said national FOCA president Michael Steffaro. “This project is significant and will make an enormous impact for all of Orthodoxy in America.”

The project will operate on a four-year phased schedule.

Year one will focus on advertising, educating, and securing pledges and grants. Years two through four will be marked with the building of each unit upon receipt of funding.

Four suggested giving levels have been established.

  • Benefactor level: $5,000 a year for three years which equates to $500/month for 10 months per year.
  • Founder level: $2,500 a year for three years which equates to $250/month for 10 months per year.
  • Supporter level: $1,000 a year for three years which equates to $100/month for 10 months per year.
  • Donor level: $500 a year for three years which equates to $50/month for 10 months per year.
