St Vladimir’s Seminary to host first-ever Composers’ Seminar June 27-30, 2007

For the first time, Saint Vladimir’s Seminary here will host a seminar for composers of Orthodox liturgical music June 27-30, 2007.

Current and renowned former SVS faculty members Mark Bailey, the Very Rev. Sergei Glagolev, Deacon Kevin Smith, and Prof. David Drillock will facilitate the seminar and present topics of direct and timely relevance to Orthodox liturgical music ministry in North America today.

The seminar will be devoted exclusively to the task of composing chant and choral music for use in Orthodox liturgical worship. Presentations, master classes, tutorials, and rehearsals will address matters of textual and musical form, liturgical practice, musical style, text-setting, and the many ethical choices that face the would-be composer today.

Mr. Bailey will offer a presentation titled “Michelangelo, The Sistine Chapel, Liturgical Music, and The Orthodox Church: Modern Composition as Ancient Restoration.” The topic of Father Sergei’s presentation will be “The Essential Nature of Liturgical Music: What the Composer Must Bring to the Composition.” Deacon Kevin will offer a presentation titled “Modes, Movements, and Motives: The Anaphora as a Study in Constructing Chant.” “Church Song as a Vehicle for Liturgical Prayer” will be the topic of Prof. Drillock’s presentation.
