Update from Fr. Glagolev on music, rehearsals for St. Tikhon’s Monastery centennial choir

April 20, 2005

To the Clergy, Choir Directors and Choir members of The Orthodox Church in America

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In January, it was announced that His Beatitude, Metropolitan Herman had asked that I direct a 100-plus-voice choir to sing at the centennial Liturgy for the 100th Anniversary of Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk Monastery, South Canaan, PA, on Monday, May 30, 2005. The response so far has been overwhelming.

Choir directors, choir members, and faithful from across North America are making plans to join me in the “centennial choir” and I want to personally thank you for the enthusiasm and responses received thus far.

To prepare for the historic Divine Liturgy and Memorial Service, I have selected music that reflects the rich musical heritage of our beloved Orthodox Church in America and it has been organized and is now available on-line via the web site of The Orthodox Church in America. I encourage those who are interested in singing with the choir to access these .pdf files and begin reviewing them.

In addition, regional rehearsals have been organized across the country, based on the location of those who have expressed an interest in participating in the Anniversary celebration. A list of locations with dates and times of rehearsals is included with this letter. I hope you’ll be able to join with the others who have informed me of their desire to sing on Memorial Day.

There will be two additional rehearsals during the Memorial Day weekend that I hope you’ll be able to attend; the first on Sunday, May 29 at 8:30pm at Genetti’s Convention Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and on Memorial Day itself, at 7:30am in the Pavilion at St. Tikhon’s Monastery, before the Divine Liturgy.

Those of you who are interested in joining the choir, please send your names and contact information to my attention, at the OCA Chancery, PO Box 675, Syosset, NY 11791, by May 1, 2005.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Very Rev. Sergei Glagolev
