Bishop Alejo greets Ecumenical Patriarch in Mexico City

His Grace, Bishop Alejo of Mexico City [far right] celebrated the Divine Liturgy with His All Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Wisdom in Mexico City.

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO [OCA Communications] — From February 8 through 12, 2006, His All Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I visited Mexico.

During his visit, he met with His Grace, Bishop Alejo of Mexico City of the Orthodox Church in America; His Eminence, Metropolitan Athenagoras of the Greek Orthodox Metropolitanate of Central America; His Eminence, Metropolitan Anthony of the Antiochian Orthodox Church; and numerous clergy representing the Orthodox Christian jurisdictions represented in the country. He also met with a number of representatives of the Mexican government and Mexico’s dominant Roman Catholic Church.

Patriarch Bartholomew, accompanied by His Eminence, Metropolitan Stephan of Estonia; His Eminence, Metropolitan Meliton of Philadelphia, a member of the Sacred and Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople; His Eminence, Archbishop Timothy III of Crete; and Metropolitan Athenagoras, was welcomed upon his arrival at the Mexico City airport by Church and state representatives. Later that evening, he attended a reception hosted by Metropolitan Anthony, which was attended by numerous religious leaders and distinguished national personalities.

On February 9, Patriarch Bartholomew delivered a lecture on ecological concerns. In the evening, he was honored at a private gathering at the residence of the President of Mexico. Accompanied by representatives of the Roman Catholic Church, he also visited the famous Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Bishop Alejo was among the hierarchs who concelebrated the Divine Liturgy with Patriarch Bartholomew at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Wisdom in Mexico City.

The trip marked the first time an Ecumenical Patriarch had visited Mexico.
