Detroit site of Liturgical Music Workshop February 3-4

— Deacon Kevin Smith, instructor in liturgical music at Saint Vladimir’s Seminary, Crestwood, NY, will conduct a workshop here February 3-4, 2006.

Titled “Communicating God’s Word Through Song, Gesture and Service,” the two-part event is being sponsored by the Music Ministry of the Council of Orthodox Christian Churches of Metropolitan Detroit [COCC].

The first part will be a discussion session at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Febuary 3, on leadership for choir directors, assistant directors, chanters, and tonsured readers. It will feature a panel that includes Deacon Smith; Deacon Silouan Rolando, Palos Park, IL; and Michelle Jannakos, Fenton, MI. The discussion will be held at the home of Pauline Costianes, a member of the COCC Music Ministry, in Canton, MI. Call 734-667-2848 for directions.

The Saturday workshop will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Saint Clement Church, 19600 Ford Road, Dearborn, MI, for singers, choir directors, chanters, and readers. The morning session will survey communication among clergy, choir directors, singers, and congregations. Other topics to be presented include communicating God’s word in worship, communication techniques, non-verbal communication, choir teamwork and commitment, and conflict resolution. Deacon Smith will direct a music reading session in the afternoon.
