SVOTS Chorale to present “Heaven and Earth” concerts April 29, May 1

SVOTS Chorale
May 2013 Chorale concert.

The Saint Vladimir’s Seminary Chorale, under the direction of Robin Freeman, will join noted chanter Eleftherios Eleftheriadis of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Shrine Church, Flushing, NY to present “Heaven and Earth: Sacred Music from the Byzantine Greek and Slavic Eastern Orthodox Christian Traditions” at the Glicker-Milstein Theatre in the Diana Center, 3009 Broadway, New York, NY at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2014.

The concert will be presented as part of Columbia University’s Institute for Religion, Culture and Public Life’s “Sound and Spirit” series, which broadly looks at how religion, faith, identity, community, and the political intermingle in the musical expressions of faith.  A panel discussion on the spiritual, devotional and musical dimensions of liturgical music will follow.  Panelists include Dr. Peter Bouteneff of Saint Vladimir’s Seminary, Archpriest Dr. John A. McGuckin of Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary, Dr. Spyridon Antonopoulos of City University London, and Dr. Nina Gilbetic of Yale Institute of Sacred Music.  The concert is being hosted and curated by Lisa Radakovich Holsberg of Fordham University’s Orthodox Christian Studies Center.

Seating is limited and reservations, which may be found on-line at ircpl.org/event/heaven-and-earth, are required.

A similar concert will be performed at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 10 Mill Road, New Rochelle, NY on Tuesday, April 29.  Reservations are not required, and seating will be on a first come, first served basis.
