New Martyr Habakkuk

The name of the New Martyr Habakkuk (Abbakoum) is not mentioned in the Synaxaristes of New Martyrs nor in the printed Synaxaristes, since no record of his martyrdom has survived. It is known only from his remembrance in codex M. Lavra Ω 89, f. 155 from the XVII century, according to which Habakkuk died on August 6, 1628 at Thessaloniki: "In the month of August the Venerable New Martyr Habakkuk bore witness to Christ in the great city of Thessaloniki to the glory and pride of the Orthodox Christians."

From his designation as "Venerable" it may be assumed that Habakkuk was a monk, probably on Mount Athos.

The name of the Holy Martyr Habakkuk was first written in the Hagiologion of Metropolitan Sophronios Eustratiádēs, who also published a catalogue of manuscripts in the Greatest Lavra Monastery, where the remembrance of Abbakoum's martyrdom is found.

Pieces of the relics of the Holy Martyr Habakkuk are kept in the monastery of Nativity in Akarnania.
