Holy Synod endorses work of FOCUS North America

In a letter addressed to the faithful of the Orthodox Church in America dated May 23, 2010, the members of the Holy Synod of Bishops endorsed the work of the Fellowship of Orthodox Christians United to Serve [FOCUS North America] in recognition of the organization’s efforts “to ministering to those at most need here in North America.”

Noting that FOCUS “has already done great work in the short time it has been in existence,” the letter acknowledges the need for mutual assistance and help in today’s difficult economic climate.

“In isolation, these difficult times can destroy one’s hope and one’s faith,” the letter reads. “It is only by coming together to ‘love one another’ that we can lift a person or family from despair to hope. This is what the Church is called to do on a daily basis. FOCUS assists all in finding Christ in even the most desperate situation.

“The Holy Synod has looked into the work of FOCUS and endorses it,” the letter concludes. “Your gifts will be put to use immediately to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and help care for those in need” and “to support existing Orthodox ministries, develop new social ministries throughout North America, and collaborate with the many faithful Orthodox volunteers.”

In response, Priest Justin Mathews, FOCUS Executive Director, reported that the organization, with its newly operational local centers and partner ministries, “endeavors to witness to the Gospel teachings of Christ by serving the poor and the needy in our own communities. Strengthened by the endorsement of the Hierarchs of the Orthodox Church in America, FOCUS North America continues to provide meals, vital life-recovery ministries, and a living witness to God’s love for all mankind.”
