Archpriest Paul Harrilchak, beloved priest and shepherd of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Ashburn, VA, fell asleep in the Lord on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
Father Paul was born on July 2, 1941, in Yonkers, NY From an early age, Father Paul described himself as a “church mouse,” feeling most at home within the walls of the Church. His love for his heritage was evident in his lifelong appreciation for Ukrainian food, song, and traditions, which he joyfully shared with his community, especially during parish gatherings and festive celebrations.
Father Paul pursued theological studies at the Catholic University of America, studying under the biblical and liturgical scholar Juan Mateos, and later at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary under Fathers Alexander Schmemann and John Meyendorff, of blessed memory. His studies ignited a lifelong passion for liturgy.
In 1978, Father Paul played an instrumental role in establishing Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Ashburn. After Father John Meyendorff’s return to St. Vladimir’s Seminary from sabbatical, Father Paul was ordained and assumed pastoral leadership of the mission.
Father Paul dedicated his life to the study of the Church’s worship. He was the author of The Divine Liturgy of the Great Church, with Melodies for Congregational Singing and Confession, with Examination of Conscience and Common Prayers, as well as numerous articles and pamphlets addressing catechetical and liturgical topics.
Father Paul is survived by his brother, Thomas, and his family; his two beloved Godchildren, Joshua and Gloria Lefchik; their mother, Sharon.
Father Paul will be remembered for his kindness, his dedication to the Church, and his enduring love for the people entrusted to his care.
May Father Paul’s memory be eternal!
