Archpriest William A. Tarenko, 87, fell asleep in the Lord here on May 8, 2016.
Born in Chicago, IL August 26, 1928, he married the former Lillian Maria Chupak in 1961. He was ordained to the diaconate and priesthood by His Grace, Bishop Dositheus of the Moscow Patriarchate at Saint Nicholas Cathedral, New York, NY in February of the same year. By special arrangements of Metropolitan Anthony Bashir, he was first assigned “on loan” to St. George Antiochian (then Syrian) Orthodox Church in Albany, New York. After his reception into the Metropolia in 1965, he served parishes in Springfield, MA; Springfield, VT; Phoenix, AZ; and Bridgeport, Hartford, and Willimantic CT. He retired as Rector of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin Church, Waterbury, CT in 1993. He was elevated to the dignity of Archpriest in 1974.
In addition to his wife, Matushka Lillian, Father William is survived by their only daughter, Natalie Tarenko.
A Panikhida will be celebrated at the Monastery Church of Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk, South Canaan, PA at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 19. The Funeral for a Priest will be celebrated at the monastery church at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 20. Interment will follow in the monastery cemetery.
