Matushka Barbara Oleynik, 93, wife of the late Archpriest John Oleynik, fell asleep in the Lord on Monday, June 12, 2017.
Born in Portage, PA in 1924, she was one of 13 children born to Joseph and Mary [Lehan] Chobany. Upon completion of high school, she was awarded a scholarship to Temple University, where she earned a bachelor degree in 1944. Returning to Portage, she taught school and later met and married her husband on September 4, 1949. She and Father John faithfully served the Holy Trinity Church, New Salem, PA, from 1949 until Father John’s repose in 1993.
Matushka Barbara was active and held leadership roles in many Church and civic organizations, including the Holy Trinity Church School Mothers, parish choir, Cub Scouts, PTA, and the Business and Professional Women’s Club. An outstanding athlete, she continued her passion for sports throughout her life. Affectionately called “Cookie Baba” by her great-grandchildren, guests were always welcomed to her home adorned by beautiful flowers on the outside and the wonderful smells of something delicious cooking or baking on the inside. She most enjoyed the frequent dinners she hosted for family and friends and cherished the time spent together over a well-prepared meal. Matushka Barbara remained steadfast in her love of God and her faith praying silently several hours each day.
Matushka Barbara is survived by four children: Archpriest Joseph [Annice] Oleynik, Protodeacon John [Myra] Oleynik, Sonya [Lee] Klingensmith, and Deacon Mark [Kelly Elizabeth]; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; her brother William Chobany, Ebensburg, PA; sister-in-law Mary Chobany, Portage, PA; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Daniel.
