Matushka Claudia (Pecevich) Safchuk, 91, loving wife of Protodeacon Basil Safchuk, attached in retirement to Saint Nicholas Church, Salem, MA, and beloved mother of Archpriest Gregory [Matushka Alexandra] Safchuk, Rector of Saint Mark Church, Bethesda, MD, fell asleep in the Lord on January 14, 2014, at the Pilgrim Rehabilitation Center, Peabody, following a short illness.
Born and raised in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Pecevich. She was a resident of Peabody for over 50 years.
Matushka Claudia was a life-long active member of Saint Nicholas Church, Salem, where she taught Sunday School for 30 years.
Besides her husband, son and daughter-in-law, she is survived by three grandchildren, Nathaniel [Sherry] Safchuk, Benjamin Safchuk and Alexander Safchuk, and several nephews and nieces, including Sandra Lillo, who for many years served as her caregiver.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, MA. A Panikhida will be sung at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be celebrated at Saint Nicholas Church, Salem, MA, on Friday, January 17, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem, MA. Donations may be made in her memory to Saint Nicholas Church, 64 Forrester Street, Salem, MA 01970.
