Matushka Sophia Hubiak Soroka, beloved wife of the late Archpriest Theodore Soroka, fell asleep in the Lord peacefully on Sunday, July 1, 2012, surrounded by loved ones, family and friends.
A daughter of the late Archpriest Afanasy and Susan Wanchisen Hubiak, Matushka Sophia was born in Akron, OH on July 14, 1925. She was a long-time member of Saints Peter and Paul Church, Miami, FL, where her husband, who in retirement fell asleep in the Lord on February 8, 2012, served as rector. She served as choir director and was a member of the Federated Russian Orthodox Clubs/Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America. Until her retirement, she was employed by AT&T, the former Bell Telephone Company, in Akron, OH and Miami.
In addition to her parents and Father Theodore, she was predeceased by her sister, Matushka Olga Kovach; two brothers, Protodeacon William and Nicholas Hubiak; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Protopresbyter Daniel and Matushka Dunia Hubiak of Maryland; her brother-in-law, Archpriest Michael Kovach, Lancaster, PA; sisters-in-law Anne Hubiak, Akron, OH, Augustine Soroka, Charleroi, PA, and Steveanna Lis, Hopewell, PA; Helen and Bill Evansky, Forest Hills, PA; Vera and Tony Trona, Canonsburg, PA; and Martha and Ron Zeli, Belle Vernon; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at Holy Resurrection Church, 217 Plainview Ave., Belle Vernon, on Wednesday, July 4, at 4:00 p.m. with the Panikhida at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Services will be celebrated the following morning at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Belle Vernon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Matushka Sophia’s family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Holy Resurrection Church Endowment Fund.
