Mr. Gregory “Gregg” Joseph Nescott, a federal prosecutor and leading lay voice in the Orthodox Church of America, fell asleep in the Lord on October 6, 2023, at his home in Pittsburgh, PA. He was 71.
Gregg was born in McKeesport, PA, he was the son of the late Attorney Lewis J. Nescott and Olga Kobasa Nescott.
He was a graduate of Dickinson College and the University of Miami (FL) School of Law. Over the course of his long and distinguished 40-year legal career, he served as an assistant district attorney and chief of the narcotics unit for Allegheny County before joining the United States District Attorney’s Office, Western District of Pennsylvania, where he was recognized for his work by the United States Department of Justice in Washington, DC.
For over five decades, Gregg was a respected lay voice within the Orthodox Church, serving on the Metropolitan Council and leading a number of national initiatives including chairing the Legal Committee of the Metropolitan Council and assisting the development of the Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America (FOCA) as a service organization of the OCA. While still in law school and serving as governor of the Miami Chapter of the FROC (FOCA’s predecessor organization), he met his future wife, Larice (Lory) Hubiak Nescott.
At the diocesan and local levels, he served in various positions in the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh as well as at his home parish, Saint Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral, and other affiliated churches throughout the region.
Gregg was awarded the Order of St. Innocent Silver Class (the highest honor accorded to a layman) for his tireless efforts on behalf of the OCA.
An accomplished baritone and bass singer, he sang in multiple regional and national choirs including the St. Alexander Nevsky choir, the Cathedral Choir, and the Pittsburgh Pan Orthodox Choir. A devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, godfather, and friend, his life was guided by his love for God and family, and a piercing intellect and wit.
Gregg was a member of Saint Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral in Allison Park, PA. He is survived by his wife of nearly 44 years, Lory Nescott, their children, Justin (Demetra), of Winter Springs, FL, Subdeacon Alexander (Erin), of Wilmington, DE, and Catherine (Marcelo) Lorenzo, of Purcellville, VA; three grandchildren, Lucy, Sophia, and Alina, a sister Adrienne (Robert) Hirsh of Evanston, IL, and brother Lewis (Mary) of Madison, CT.
Friends and Family will be received 2:00 - 7:00 PM on Wednesday, October 11, at Saint Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral, 8290 Thompson Run Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. A Panikhida will be held at 7:00 PM Wednesday at the church following the Visitation.
The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 12, at 10:00 AM at Saint Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral.
Interment will be in St. Tikhon Orthodox Monastery Cemetery, 175 St. Tikhon’s Road, Waymart, PA 18472 at 2:00 PM.
