Services and interment for Protopresbyter George Dimopoulos will be celebrated at Saint Tikhon’s Monastery Church and Cemetery here on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 12:30 p.m.
Father George fell asleep in the Lord on Tuesday, October 23, at his home in Upper Darby, PA.
A priest of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, Father George was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in New Testament at Saint Tikhon’s Seminary, where he taught Dogmatic Theology and New Testament Greek from 1965-1998. He was deeply beloved by students, faculty, and everyone who had the good fortune to spend time in his presence. He was a dedicated churchman and loving husband and father, and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him, especially the countless individuals who studied under his wise direction.
Father George was a graduate of the Halki Theological Seminary. In addition to teaching at Saint Tikhon’s Seminary, he served parishes in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Upper Darby, PA and New York, NY. Prior to his arrival in the US, he served parishes in Constantinople, Thessaloniki, and Toronto. He also taught at the Savonarola Seminary of the Polish National Catholic Church, Scranton, PA.
In 2007, marking the 50th Anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood, Father George was awarded the degree Doctor of Divinity Honoris Causa by His Grace, Bishop Tikhon, on behalf of the seminary Board of Trustees, faculty, and administration. An article highlighting this celebration, as well as a short biographical outline, was featured in the 2007 edition of the Tikhonaire.
Visitation will begin at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 229 Powell Lane, Upper Darby, PA at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 26, with the celebration of the Trisagion at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, October 27, Orthros will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m., followed by the Divine Liturgy and Funeral Service for a Priest at 10:00 a.m. at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 32 East Ross Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA.
