The Very Rev. Gregory Szyrynski, Rector of the Holy Myrrhbearers Church, West Sacramento, CA, fell asleep in the Lord on the evening of Tuesday, January 15, 2008.
Born in Poland in 1944, in 1958 he enrolled at the Orthodox Theological Seminary while simultaneously completing his high school education. He was later ordained to the diaconate and then the priesthood by Bishop Basil of Wroclaw and Szczecin, who would later become Metropolitan of Warsaw and All Poland. Fr. Gregory received a Master’s Degree in Orthodox Theology from the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw, Poland in 1983. His thesis was on the history of the Suprasl Monastery. He served as a parish priest in several parishes in Poland prior to his arrival in the US. Received into the OCA in 1991, he was Rector of Holy Myrrhbearers Church since 1994.
Survived by his wife, Valentina, and their two sons, Father Gregory will be missed by his relatives, parishioners and friends.
The Funeral Service for a Priest will be celebrated by His Grace, Bishop Benjamin of San Francisco on Sunday evening, January 20, 7:00 PM, at Holy Myrrhbearers Church, W. Sacramento, CA. His Grace will celebrate the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the church at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 21, with interment following.
