The Very Rev. Paul Kasaty, long-time retired pastor of Saint Nicholas Church, died on Friday, October 24, 2003 after a bout with pancreatic cancer.
Born in 1923 in the Wilno region of what at the time was Poland, Father Kasaty moved to Germany during the early days of World War II. In 1944 he married the former Irene Konowalczyk. In 1951 he and his wife immigrated to the US, eventually settling in San Diego, CA, where he was very active in Church life.
In 1964, he was ordained to the Holy Diaconate by the late Archbishop John [Shahovskoy] of San Francisco at Saint Nicholas Church, San Diego. In 1973 he was elevated to the rank of Protodeacon. After completing theological studies at Saint Tikhon Seminary, he was ordained to the Holy Priesthood by Bishop Tikhon of San Francisco in 1988 and assigned Rector of Saint Nicholas Church, which he served until his retirement in February 2003.
Father Kasaty, who was preceded in death by his wife in June 2002, is survived by two sons, a daughter, and five grandchildren.
Father Kasaty will lie in state at Saint Nicholas Church, 3873 Cherokee Ave., San Diego. A Memorial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 29, at 7:00 PM. On Thursday, October 30, the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 9:00 AM. The funeral service, concelebrated by the Very Rev. Ian MacKinnon, Chancellor of the Diocese of the West, and diocesan clergy, will follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
