Archimandrite Laurence of New Skete Resigns

On Wednesday, September 27, 2000, the three monastic communities of New Skete in Cambridge, NY, accepted the resignation of Archimandrite Laurence [Mancuso]. Father Laurence founded the Monks of New Skete in 1966 and was Superior for the next 34 years. He was elevated to Archimandrite of the Monks of New Skete, the Nuns of New Skete, and the Companions of New Skete in 1986.

Father Laurence tendered his resignation for health reasons. The acceptance of Archimandrite Laurences resignation was confirmed by His Beatitude, Metropolitan Theodosius, who also granted him a leave of absence for six months so that he might receive rest and appropriate care.

Brother Luke [Dorr], a stavrophore monk of New Skete, was elected temporary superior of the monks [prohegumenos]. The present superior of the nuns, Sister Cecelia [Harvey], and of the companions, Brother Stephen [Updike], share responsibilities with Brother Luke in governing the communities.

The monks, nuns, and companions of New Skete are united in their commitment to carry on the vision of New Skete originally articulated by Father Laurence to live the Gospel commands and to serve the Church with renewed vigor.

His Beatitude, Metropolitan THEODOSIUS paid an archpastoral visit to the monastic communities on October 3 and 4, showing them his love and support for their efforts during this time of transition. Together, the communities of New Skete ask for the continued prayers of the Church.
