Detroit site of spring Liturgical Music Workshop

Saint Andrew’s Center for Orthodox Christian Studies, 23300 Davison, Detroit, will be the site of the Spring Music Workshop sponsored by the Council of Orthodox Christian Churches of Detroit [COCC] on Saturday, March 23, 2002.

Guest speaker will be Mr. Mark Bailey, a member of the faculty of Saint Vladimir’s Seminary, Crestwood, NY. Mr. Bailey will explore a variety of topics, including musical forms and structure; the function, history and meaning of hymn types and texts; the role of music in the Liturgy; antiphonal and responsorial singing; and meeting the challenges of Orthodox choirs today. A prolific composer, Mr. Bailey has written many sacred works for the Orthodox Church. Some of his works will be sung at the Sunday of Orthodoxy Vesper Service slated to be celebrated at Saint Clement Ohridski Church, Dearborn, MI, on the evening of March 24, 2002. Mr. Bailey will be guest conductor at the pan-Orthodox celebration.

Choir members, directors, non-singers, and clergy are invited to participate in the workshop, which will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude with Great Vespers at 6:00 p.m. The $20.00 registration fee includes materials and a light lunch.
