Fr. Sergei Glagolev to be featured on Liturgical Music Chatroom Tuesday, December 19

SYOSSET, NY [OCA Communications] — The Very Rev. Sergei Glagolev will lead a discussion titled “Effective Musical Leadership: Compentence, Skills, and Training” on the Orthodox Church in America’s liturgical music chat room on Tuesday, December 19, at 8:30 PM EST.

Father Sergei is descended from a long line of priests and educators dating from the 16th century. He grew up in the religious and cultural milieu of the huge Russian immigration of the Gary, IN and Cleveland, OH areas in the 1920s and 1930s. His musical education began at the age of seven under the tutelage of his father, a well-known priest-composer and choirmaster.

Father Sergei began directing the Pittsburgh Cathedral choir at the age of 13. After World War II, he studied at Oberlin, Julliard, New York University, and Saint Vladimir’s Seminary. He served as choirmaster in Clifton, NJ; Lorain, OH; and Detroit, MI. In 1951 he was ordained to the diaconate. He was ordained to the priesthood the following year, after
which he spent many years serving parishes in California and New York.

Father Sergei taught at Saint Vladimir’s, Saint Tikhon’s, and Saint Herman’s seminaries. He retains the title of professor emeritus at Saint Tikhon’s Seminary, lecturer at Saint Vladimir’s, and visiting professor at Saint Herman’s. He also served as the first director of the Fellowship of Orthodox Stewards.

In his active retirement, Father Sergei continues to lecture and write on various musical topics and to compose liturgical music.
