Metropolitan Herman to preside at SVS Education Day

For the first time since his election as Primate of the Orthodox Church in America in July 2002, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Herman will preside at the Divine Liturgy marking the opening of the 33rd annual Orthodox Education Day at Saint Vladimir Seminary here Saturday, October 5, 2002.

Concelebrating with Metropolitan Herman at the 9:30 a.m. Divine Liturgy will be His Eminence, Metropolitan Filaret of Minsk and Slutsk, chairman of the Synodal Theological Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church. Metropolitan Filaret will be the featured speaker at an academic symposium, titled “Russian Theological Traditions: Yesterday and Today,” to be held on the seminary campus October 2-4. As fitting conclusion to the symposium and in recognition of Metropolitan Filaret’s tireless labors in the field of theological education, the seminary will bestow an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree upon him immediately following Saturday’s Liturgy.

The choir of Saint Michael Antiochian Orthodox Church, Louisville, KY and the Saint Vladimir Seminary Chorale will sing the responses at the Liturgy.

Following the Liturgy, this year’s Education Day theme, “The Future of Orthodox Theology,” will be explored through workshops on parish web site development, methods of responding to community crises, changes faced by today’s parishes, the call of the laity, and iconography. Education day attendees will also enjoy foods from many lands, a children’s booth, and specialty exhibits. Youth participants at the 13th All-American Council and campers from Orthodox camps are especially invited to attend the full-day program for a reunion and other activities.
