Mt. Athos site of 2006 International Ecology, Spirituality Camp

MT. ATHOS, GREECE [OCA Communications] — Dr. Dimitri Oikonomou of Oxford, England, former president of Syndesmos, the World Fellowship of Orthodox Youth, will lead the annual ecology and spirituality camp at Saint Paul Monastery here July 25 through August 5, 2006.

The camp is open to young Orthodox Christian men from around the world. Participation is limited to 18 participants, who are responsible for paying their own transportation to and from Greece and visa fees, if applicable. [US and Canadian participants will need a tourist visa.] The nominal registration fee of 35 Euros [approximately US $45.00] includes certificates permitting entrance to the Holy Mountain, lodging, and all meals.

“The annual program was initiated in the 1990s as a means of offering young Orthodox Christian men from around the world the opportunity to experience monastic life and spirituality while taking part in practical outdoor work and various ecological projects aimed at preserving and improving the Holy Mountain’s environment,” according to Deacon Joseph Matusiak, former Syndesmos administrative assistant and member of The Orthodox Church in America’s Department of Youth, Young Adult, and Campus Ministry. “Campers will also have the opportunity to visit a number of other Athonite monasteries.”

The camp also includes visits to several other monasteries.
