Noted Professors to Speak at St. Tikhon, St. Herman Commencement Exercises

SYOSSET, NY [OCA Communications]—Prof. Herman Tristram Engelhardt, Jr., M.D., Ph.D. of Rice University will deliver the commencement address at graduation exercises at Saint Herman Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kodiak, AK Sunday, May 23, 2004. Widely known as a bioethicist, Prof. Englehardt is the author of “Foundations of Christian Bioethics.”

His Grace, Bishop Nikolai of Sitka, Anchorage and Alaska will preside at commencement exercises, during which two students will receive degrees and three additional students will be recognized for completing their studies as Readers.

On the following day, Monday, May 24, a special education day program will be held, highlighting the ongoing and expanding work of Saint Herman Seminary.

On Saturday, May 29, Dr. Jaroslav Pelikan will address graduates of Saint Tikhon Orthodox Theological Seminary, South Canaan, PA during commencement exercises in conjunction with the 100th annual pilgrimage to Saint Tikhon Monastery.

Dr. Pelikan, a well known theologian and Church historian, will speak on the theme “Memory Eternal” during the commencement exercises.

His Beatitude, Metropolitan Herman, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America and seminary president and His Grace, Bishop Tikhon of South Canaan, Rector of St. Tikhon Seminary will be present for graduation. Metropolitan Herman will award Dr. Pelikan an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters during the ceremony.

Saint Tikhon Seminary’s 2004 class includes twelve seminarians.
