OCA Christian Ed Department holds North Texas regional conference

On Saturday, September 29, 2007, the Department of Christian Education [DCE] of the Orthodox Church in America held a one-day conference for teachers, parents, youth leaders and anyone interested in Christian Education.

Titled “In the Beginning,” the conference utilized the book of Genesis as an example of what teachers and parents can do to instruct children and Church School students of various age and grade levels.

Saint Barbara Church, Fort Worth, TX, hosted the event which attracted 53 participants from seven OCA and Antiochian communities throughout the day. The conference concluded with the celebration of Great Vespers.

His Eminence, Archbishop Dmitri of Dallas and the South, delivered the first keynote address, titled “The Church’s Use of Scripture in her Services.” Matushka Valerie Zahirsky, the second keynote speaker, spoke on “How Genesis Can Help Our Kids Navigate Their World.”

Three workshops were offered by DCE members. Mrs. Daria Petrykowski presented “What? Who? When?” in which she explored a variety of aspects of lesson content. Mrs. Veronica Bilas held a workshop on “Creative Ideas for Home and Church School,” which gave hands-on examples of activities and resources for all age levels. Matushka Christine Zebrun presented “The Welcoming Classroom,” which surveyed instructional, functional, and creative ideas and solutions to create a more inviting learning environment.

Displays and free resource materials from various Orthodox Christian vendors were available to participants.
