Santa Rosa, CA site of liturgical singing seminar February 17-18, 2006

SANTA ROSA, CA [OCA Communications] — PSALM Inc. will host a liturgical singing seminar titled “Melodies of Orthodox Worship” at Saint Seraphim Church here February 17-18, 2006.

The seminar will provide participants from all Orthodox traditions an opportunity to gather to grow musically, liturgically, and spiritually in the common ministry of liturgical singing.

Seminar speakers include the following.

1. Stephen Reynolds holds a BA from Princeton 1953, an MA from Harvard 1963, and a PhD Harvard 1966, and taught at University of Southern California and University of Oregon. He has been studying the melodies of South-Western Rus’ and their historical development since 1970. He participated in the St. Vladimir’s Symposium on Church Music in 2002 and 2004, and has served on the board of directors of Cappella Romana for four years. Currently Stephen attends St John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church near Portland, and is working on a survey of podoben melodies of East-Slavic provenance, compiling an index of automela and prosomoia, and working on projects of English-language folksong.

2. John Michael Boyer began performing with the Portland Opera Association at the age of 7. He has studied Byzantine Chant under Alexander Lingas, Lycourgos Angelopoulos, and Ioannis Arvanitis, both of Athens. John recently completed the Music Major at University of California at Berkeley and now serves as cantor and instructor of Byzantine Chant at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in San Francisco and the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute in Berkeley. He teaches at liturgical music seminars across the United States, performs with Capella Romana, and has coached groups such as Chanticleer in their Byzantine performances. His transcriptions and English adaptations of Byzantine Chant are performed widely.

3. Nicolas Custer, studied musicology at UC Berkeley and UCLA, and has been conducting Orthodox choirs on the West Coast and in Russia and Ukraine for 23 years. He is especially interested in the traditions of Russian monastic singing, and is currently the conductor at the Orthodox Church of the Protection of the Holy Virgin Mary/St. Seraphim of Sarov in Santa Rosa, CA.

4. Fr. Lawrence Margitich is the priest at the OCA parish of the Protection of the Virgin/St. Seraphim in Santa Rosa, California. He has Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, in guitar performance and orchestral conducting (1980) and a Master Divinity from St. Vladimir’s Seminary (1984). He directed choirs at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Boston and in Santa Rosa. and has focused on setting special melodies and Znamenny chant in English. He currently serves as the head of the music department of the OCA Diocese of the West.

5. Alice Hughes serves on the Board of Directors for PSALM, Inc., where she also serves as Editor-in-Chief for PSALM Notes. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of the Pacific in Music Education with a choral emphasis. Together with Anne Schoepp she produces and directs recordings for Seraphim Six Productions. She helped create and organize the Liturgical Singing Seminar and has been directing choral music and teaching voice since 1981. Alice teaches choral music at Pacific Collegiate High School in Santa Cruz, CA, and is currently co-director at St. Lawrence Orthodox Church in Felton, California.

6. Anne Schoepp has directed and organized the Liturgical Singing Seminar since its creation in 1994. She holds a B.A. in Music from Stanford University with an emphasis in choral music and composition. Anne serves on the Board of Directors for PSALM, Inc., has been directing choral and instrumental music since 1984, and is active composing and arranging church music. Together with Alice Hughes she produces and directs recordings for Seraphim Six Productions, teaches music at St. Lawrence Academy, and is currently co-director at St. Lawrence Orthodox Church in Felton, California.
