Serbian Orthodox Church elects new Patriarch

Bells rang in the Serbian capital as news of the election of a successor to His Holiness, the late Patriarch Pavle, spread.

His Grace, Bishop Irinej [Gavrilovic] of Niš, 80, was elected by members of the Serbian Church’s Assembly of Bishops on Friday, January 22, 2010. He becomes the 45th Patriarch of Serbia.

While formal announcement has yet to be received, reports of the election immediately appeared in the international media and on the internet.

Patriarch Pavle fell asleep in the Lord at the age of 95 on November 15, 2009, after a lengthy illness.
