St. Vladimir’s Seminary to host 23rd annual Fr. Alexander Schmemann lecture January 29th

Avery Cardinal Dulles will deliver this year’s Fr. Alexander Schmemann Memorial lecture on January 29th, 2006.

CRESTWOOD, NY [OCA Communications] — Avery Cardinal Dulles, an
internationally known author and lecturer, will deliver the 23rd annual Father Alexander Schmemann Memorial Lecture at Saint Vladimir’s Seminary here Sunday, January 29, 2006 at 7:30 p.m.

The memorial lecture series is devoted to theological excellence and issues that were particularly important to the late Protopresbyter Alexander Schmemann, as dean of the seminary from 1962 to 1983. Father Alexander’s lectures and writings, especially in the field of liturgical theology, influenced countless individuals, Orthodox and non-Orthodox alike, around the world.

An influential theologian and author of 22 books and nearly 800 articles and reviews on a wide variety of theological topics, Cardinal Dulles holds a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Gregorian University in Rome. He has
served on the faculty of Woodstock College and Catholic University of America. Since 1988, has been serving as the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society at Fordham University. He has been a visiting lecturer at over a dozen seminaries and universities, including Princeton Theological Seminary and Notre Dame and Yale Universities. In 2001, he was elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope John Paul II.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Prior to the lecture, Great Vespers for the Feast of the Three Hierarchs will celebrated in the seminary’s Three Hierarchs Chapel at 6:30 p.m.
