Dr. Bruce Foltz, an Orthodox Christian and Professor of Philosophy at Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, FL, will offer a free and public lecture, “The Truth of Nature,” at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary here at 7:00 p.m. on September 1, 2013.

The talk will contrast today’s post–modern assumptions regarding the environment with patristic and historic Christian understandings of what it means to care for God’s creation.

The lecture is being sponsored by Saint Herman’s Society for Orthodox Ecology (a seminarian-led group established in 2010 to address issues of ecological stewardship) and the Orthodox Fellowship of Transfiguration.

Preceding the lecture, at 6:00 p.m., members of Saint Herman’s Society will plant a new tree on the seminary grounds to beautify the campus, which will be followed by an “Akathist in Praise of God’s Creation” in Three Hierarch’s Chapel.  Society members selected the date for the tree planting, Akathist, and lecture to coincide with the date designated by His All-Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, as a day dedicated to environmental protection.

The lecture will be held in the Metropolitan Philip Auditorium of the John G. Rangos Family Foundation Building and will be followed by a question and answer session and a public reception.
