Lehigh Valley Clergy to host concert by STOTS choir February 19

STOTS

The Lehigh Valley Orthodox Clergy Brotherhood will host a benefit concert by the Saint Tikhon’s Seminary Choir at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Bethlehem, PA on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at 6:30 p.m.

The performance, titled “Psalms and Hymns,” features Orthodox Christian sacred music that highlights the Biblical foundations of the Church’s worship.

“In November, we performed this program at Eastern University in Philadelphia, and it was very well received,” said Benedict Sheehan, Director of Music at Saint Tikhon’s Seminary and Monastery, South Canaan, PA.  “We look forward to performing it again for people in the Lehigh Valley in a sacred space that complements the music’s beauty and spiritual depth.”

“This concert is a perfect way to experience the beauty and scriptural depth of Orthodox Christian worship,” said Priest Andrew Stephen Damick, President of the Clergy Brotherhood which represents 13 parishes throughout the region.

Drawing especially on the thousand-year-old tradition of monastic singing in Russia, the program includes examples of Znamenny Chant, as well as more recent arrangements by composers from the Moscow Synodal School and the Trinity-Saint Sergius Lavra.  Also included on the program are arrangements by the late Deacon Sergei Trubachev [1919-1995]; an original work by Mr. Sheehan, based on Znamenny chant; and a Byzantine-style psalm popular on Mt. Athos. All selections will be sung in English.

Joining the choir as canonarch will be Hierodeacon Herman [Majkrzak] of Saint Tikhon’s Monastery and Liturgics Instructor at the seminary.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the students of Saint Tikhon’s Seminary. Tickets will be available at the door for $10.00.  Direct donations above that level also are most welcome and will be earmarked to help pay the tuition of seminarians singing in the concert.

The public is invited.  A reception in the parish hall will follow the performance.
