St. Tikhon’s Chamber Choir to perform Rachmaninov All-Night Vigil
The Chamber Choir of Saint Tikhon’s Monastery, an acclaimed professional vocal ensemble under the auspices of North America’s oldest Orthodox monastery, will perform Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil, Op. 43, on Sunday, May 27, 2018, in conjunction with the 114th Annual Memorial Day Pilgrimage to the monastery. The concert will be performed in the visually rich and acoustically stunning atmosphere of Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Cathedral, Wilkes-Barre, PA.
Acknowledged almost immediately as a masterwork since its premiere in 1915, Rachmaninov’s beloved setting of the Ordinary Hymns of the Orthodox Vespers and Matins services continues to enjoy immense popularity to the present day.
“It is arguably the single most popular work of sacred choral music in the world today, and justifiably so,” says Benedict Sheehan, Artistic Director of the Monastery Chamber Choir, who will be conducting the performance. “For spiritual depth and sheer sonic beauty, I can’t think of its equal and I’m absolutely thrilled to be able to the bring this music to audiences in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area.”
