Youth Department expands social media offerings
The Department of Youth, Young Adult, and Campus Ministry is expanding its offerings in social media. The Department has just launched a twitter account (@OCAYouth) to augment its already active Facebook page and YouTube channel.
The project, described below, already has been initiated may be accessed here.
“We are attempting to inject our rich liturgical life into the social media space, to continue our call to make the Kingdom of God a reality in our realities,” said Andrew Boyd, OCA Youth Director. “One of the ways we are doing this is through our pilot project named #Kathisma, which will use the Youth Department’s twitter account to tweet the entire book of psalms 140 characters at a time over the course of the next several months.
“The continuous recitation of psalms—known in our liturgical life as the kathisma—is an ancient practice preserved in the daily and weekly cycle of our services,” said Priest Christopher Rowe, who oversees the Youth Department’s social media team. “Our twitter account will tweet three or four psalms lines a day, starting with psalm one, with the hashtag #Kathisma. We are hoping to bring our ancient discipline of reciting the psalms into the twitter world. And, when we get to the end of the psalms, our plan is to do what the Church always does, start back at the beginning.”
“An added bonus of this project is that the entire book of psalms will be searchable on twitter through our account,” Andrew added. “It is our goal to be able to offer a taste of the liturgical life of the Church to those who are frequent users of social media while building an enduring resource.”
The Department continues to use its ever-growing facebook page to share events, hymnography, icons, scripture and patristic readings. It is also developing several engaging new videos for its Youtube Channel. The Youth Department Social Media team meets every Monday evening by teleconference and includes clergy, marketing, social media, and project management professionals, and interested young adults.
