Candles and prayers: Remembering the victims and their families

Boys lighting candles

On Sunday, December 16, 2012, prayers were offered in every parish for those who perished in the tragic Connecticut school shooting and their families.

At Saint John the Baptist Church, Edwardsville, PA, Sunday School students lit 27 candles at the beginning of classes, one for each victim of the tragedy.

“The parish remembered them in prayer during the Divine Liturgy, as all were reminded to consider carefully who they might add to their prayer list amongst the living, especially those who suffer from depression or struggling with a multiplicity of forms of mental illness,” said Priest Martin Watt, acting rector, who encouraged the faithful to get to know and visit their neighbors regularly, to reach out to those in need, and to remember them in their prayers.
