Parish Background

St Nicholas Church in Narol was founded in 1911 by immigrants from the Brody area in Galicia.  Like most Rusins/Western Ukrainians, these pioneers had been Greek Catholic in their homeland, which at that time belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  Upon their arrival in Canada, the people reunited with the Orthodox Church of their forebears, becoming a part of the Russian Orthodox Mission in North America.  In its hundred years of life, the community of St. Nicholas is now an integral part of the Archdiocese of Canada and of the Orthodox Church in America.  Worship is celebrated entirely in English, and the majority of chants and liturgical customs are those of western Ukrainian Orthodoxy (Galician chant).

The congregation strives to fulfill its stewardship and church growth responsibilities as a parish of the OCA.  Given the growth at St. Nicholas, and its relatively small space in which to serve and provide fellowship, an agreement was made to rent the much larger Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Gonor (just down the road) as they have reduced their liturgical life to one Sunday a month.  Unlike St. Nicholas in Narol, only the Holy Trinity temple space is accessible for those with mobility challenges (with washroom), yet at this time the hall is not.  Although transportation is not an easy matter, the parish is nonetheless attracting many visitors, and family and single converts - for which we are thankful that we can facilitate a space to serve in for Sundays and major feasts.
