Parish Background
Many Eastern European immigrant workers arrived in Albion shortly after the turn of the 20th century. One of their first concerns was to build a church. With the help of a local iron foundry, for which most of them worked, as well as some local fund raising, they were able to build and finally consecrate Holy Ascension Orthodox Church in 1916.
The community at Holy Ascension has continued to be an important part of the Albion community throughout its presence there. As many Orthodox Churches founded at that time, Holy Ascension was very much focused on the needs of its Orthodox immigrants. Since then, however, its population has changed to a diverse group of Americans, both convert and Orthodox-born, as well and second and third generation Russians, Greeks, etc.
For a few years the parish struggled under intermittent pastoral care. Our current priest, Fr. Joshua, arrived with his family in October of 2002. Since then, we have been able to have a full liturgical schedule, with Vespers and Divine Liturgy every weekend, as well as feasts, etc. We also now have weekly adult education and Sunday School for children.
