Parish Background
The orthodox Community of Pella, St. Nicholas, is a Mission of the Orthodox Church in America’s Midwest Diocese. St. Nicholas finds its home in the historic central Iowa town of Pella. Officially launched in the spring of 2002 with the blessing of His Grace the Right Reverend Job, Bishop of Chicago and the Midwest, St. Nicholas’ actual origins stem from the whisper-like prayers of a number of people who longed to see the truths of ancient Orthodoxy fostered and growing in central Iowa.
It was with these notions in mind that the Minneapolis Deanery began, a few years ago, sending a priest to conduct an annual service during “Tulip Time,” Pella’s well known Dutch heritage festival. The early effort was very well received, and it was soon realized by all involved that there was a need for something more permanent and consistent. And so, after a number of years of prayer, and as a result of a joint effort by the Minneapolis and Chicago Deaneries, the Orthodox Church in America’s Missions Committee, and a number of Bishops, Priests and Friends from all over the United States and the world, St. Nicholas was born originally as the “Pella Orthodox Christian Outreach”. As one priest has recently stated, referring to the mission, “it is a new baby come into the world - and I hope that she will be walking very soon!” This is our hope as well.
We cordially invite you to come worship and walk with us in the resurrection light of the Savior who has “trampled down death by death”, and opened the gates of eternity to us all.
