Parish Background

Holy Myrrhbearers Chapel is an outreach of St. Herman Orthodox Church in Minneapolis, MN.

Prior to 2000, St. Cloud was home to a number of Orthodox Christians who had become accustomed to driving to the Twin Cities or Duluth in order to worship.  In 2000 a priest from St. Mary’s Cathedral in Minneapolis began driving to St. Cloud to conduct Lenten services in a local family’s home and to begin dialogue on founding a community in St. Cloud.  By April 2001 a small group of the faithful, with a blessing from their pastor and the bishop, had purchased a 1920s Neo-Gothic church building and were officially recognized as a mission community.  The first service in the church was the Divine Liturgy on the Sunday of the Holy Myrrhbearers (29 April 2001).

In the short time since then, we have made several significant improvements to the building including renovation of the bell tower, installation of an historic bell from a now-closed Orthodox Church outside Holdingford, MN, and the construction of the iconostasis.

We have embraced the diversity of our church family and this is reflected in our liturgical practice, music, and community celebrations.  Irrespective of our small size, we are undoubtedly one of the most well-known faith communities in St. Cloud.  We owe this to our tenacious adherence to the Scripture and the Faith of the ancient Church, together with an enthusiasm for sharing our cultures with the community through fellowship.
