Parish Background
Founded in 1964, St Gregory’s now marks close to 60 years as the only fully English-speaking Orthodox parish in the Hudson Valley between Albany and the Tappan Zee. With our membership in the wide geographic area, our daily ministry covers a huge area with people commuting up to 3 hours to come to services. We are a diverse parish of many backgrounds and a growing number of people who are joining the Faith. The parish is particularly dedicated to a strong liturgical life combined with a deep sense of being part of the local community. We strive to be a koinonia in the strongest sense of the word – a communion of believers.
Five rectors have served the parish: Fr. George Timko, Fr. Pitirim Stehnach, Fr. Thomas Hopko, Fr Alexis Vinogradov with Fr Michael Plekon attached, Fr. Steven Evanina and now currently Fr. Eric G. Tosi. The parish maintains a lively parish life along with deep community service. St. Gregory is also a site of training for St. Vladimir’s Seminary interns who spend a year in mentorship at the parish. The parish also hosts an outreach to a variety of places such as Vassar College, Marist College and the United States Military Academy at West Point. They are deeply involved in the Dutchess Outreach and other community organizations.
The parish has a unique design with many of the icons and items made by the parishioners themselves. All services and classes are live-streamed on the parish’s social media and website. As Fr. Thomas Hopko, one of the clergy assigned to St. Gregory wrote, “An Orthodox parish, that is, a local community of Orthodox Christians with one or more priests, has only one God-given reason for being. It exists to be the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church of Christ. Whatever the original reasons and conditions for its founding, whatever other services and activities it may provide, whatever other desires and needs it may fulfill for its members, the parish must be Christ’s one holy Church. If it is not, then it is neither Christian nor Orthodox whatever else it may be or do.” St. Gregory the Theologian Church strives to fulfill that mission every day. Come and See!
