Parish Background

With the blessing of His Eminence, Archbishop Dmitri, St Matthew the Apostle was established as a diocesan mission station during Great Lent 2006. Under the guidance of Fr Theodore Pisarchuk, Missions Director for the Diocese of the South, several priests from around the diocese began visiting on a monthly basis for services in English. This schedule was supplemented by weekly Reader services beginning that summer when the mission rented a store-front on Hewwood Avenue.

In 2007 and 2008, Fr Sergius Clark served liturgies for Holy Week and Pascha. During the summer of 2008, a mission team from St Athanasius Mission in Nicholasville, Kentucky led by Fr Justin Patterson assisted the mission’s relocation to its present home on Jefferson Highway. In February 2009, Fr Mark Christian was ordained and appointed as priest-in-charge after completing the OCA Late Vocations Program. In August 2016, Fr. Joshua Trant was assigned to the mission as priest-in-charge. St. Matthew relocated to its current location on Coursey Blvd in 2018.
