Parish Background

Our parish began with three people in 1996 that wanted an English-language Orthodox Church within which to raise their families and meet and evangelize those who hunger for the Truth.  St. Innocent was chosen as our patron saint because in some humble way we hope to emulate the life and work of this early Russian missionary to Alaska by bringing Orthodox Christianity to our own culture of the Deep South.

Shephered by Archbishop Dmitri and with the generous assistance of Fathers John Breck, John Stefero, Ted Pisarchuk, Peter Smith, Thomas Moore, Hieromonk Innokenty Chmerko, Christopher Williamson, and our curent pastor, Fr Theophan Buck, St. Innocent has grown into a regional parish that draws its members from throughout central Georgia:  as far north as McDonough; south to Warner Robins; east to Milledgeville and Monticello, and all points in between.  Today our community is comprised of a wonderful blend of converts to the faith, American-born “cradle” Orthodox, and various ethnic Orthodox Christians from Ukraine, Russia, Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, Estonia, Serbia, ad Lebanon.  In many ways, we represent the “American Orthodox Church” that many of our forefathers envisioned.

While we once prayed around a member’s living room table, today we worship in a beautiful sanctuary styled after a Georgian church from the 6th century.  In building the church first, we violated the usual custom of starting with a multi-purpose hall, but this decision reflected our priority to establish first a place for divine worship unto ages of ages.

St. Innocent Orthodox Church continues to build on the foundations erected in the past decade.  We want to attract those whose spiritual quest will be answered in the fullness of the Orthodox faith; we look to be a force for good in the Bolingbroke-Macon area; and we hope to intensify and increase our own practice of the faith.  The parish maintains as first priority the offering of the community’s worship to God.

Men and women for two millennia have sought out Orthodox Christianity as the “pearl of great price” precisely because of its unwavering focus on knowing, loving, and serving the Living God.  For those who seek this Truth, the parish offers inquirer’s class where one can come to know the ancient faith.

To all the parish extends a hearty welcome, and an invitation to “come and see.” (John 1:46)
