Reflection on the Meeting of the Lord / Zacchaeus Sunday

Today, St. Simeon receives the long-awaited Messiah in his arms, and he sings, “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace!” As Orthodox Christians, we end each day with these same words, which are read or sung at the conclusion of Vespers every evening. Thus, we seal the days of our life, and our life as whole, with an expression of humble gratitude: to see the Lord coming as Savior is all we need; once our eyes have seen his salvation, we can depart in his peace. In order to receive the peace of the Lord at every moment, and in order to carry the Lord not once in our arms, but always in our hearts, it behooves us to consecrate all our life to the Christ, the Peace and Radiance of God the Father, through the practice of the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
