Time and again, the hymns of this joyous season point out that the myrrh-bearers were a little confused: Nicodemus had already buried the Body of the Lord with about a hundred pounds of myrrh and aloes, but on Sunday morning, these women came with even more sweet spices. They did not understand the significance of the Lord’s Passion or know that he was bound to rise. But they did love much, and so were worthy to hear the news from the lips of an angel: “He is not here; he is risen.” These women who loved and served the Lord to the best of their ability set aside their myrrh and became the first human messengers of the fundamental truth of the universe: “Christ is risen!”
