Today, we read the Gospel of the Prodigal Son, and hear how, when the lad “was still a great way off,” his father rushed to embrace him. At the beginning of the penitential season, this scene reminds us that, even as we take our first steps toward repentance, the Father of all is already close at hand, ready to receive us in his embrace. Indeed, even before we made any effort to return to God, God had already rushed down from the heavens to ascend the Cross, spreading his arms on the Rood to embrace us with divine love. Last week, the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee encouraged us to begin with humility, not putting our trust in our own efforts; today’s parable encourages us to be utterly confident in the unfailing love of God. If we turn back, he is ready to receive us.
