Monastic funeral services for Abbess Barbara [Johnson] of the Skete of Our Lady of Kazan here were celebrated by His Eminence, Archbishop Benjamin of San Francisco and the West on Thursday, January 17, 2013.
Abbess Barbara fell asleep in the Lord on Monday, January 14 after an extended illness.
Born in Farmington, CT on July 15, 1930, she entered an Episcopalian monastic order in August 1972. On October 1, 1981, she was received into the Orthodox Christian Faith at Three Hierarchs Chapel at Saint Vladimir’s Seminary, Crestwood, NY. Shortly thereafter, she was assigned to Holy Assumption Monastery, Calistoga, CA, where she was tonsured to the rank of stavrophore and appointed abbess on November 20, 1982. On January 2, 1984, she and others from Calistoga were transferred to the Holy Cross Monastery at Saint Eugene Hermitage, Pt. Reyes, CA. In October 1996, she and the sisterhood were transferred to the Skete of Our Lady of Kazan.
Interment took place in the monastery’s section of Oak Mound Cemetery.
