Priest Jacob Myers, 64, rector of Saint John the Wonderworker Church here, fell asleep in the Lord unexpectedly in hospital on Wednesday evening, January 16, 2013 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his family and members of the parish he served.
Born October 28, 1948, Father Jacob was a graduate of Northwestern University. He was ordained to the priesthood of the Orthodox Church in America in 2000 and appointed rector of Saint John Church. He and his parish were well known for their ministry to the needy and homeless within the greater Atlanta community.
“Father Jacob ran a feeding program for the homeless from his parish next to Grant Park in Atlanta,” according to Priest Geoffrey Korz of All Saints of North America Church, Hamilton, ON, Canada, a long-time friend. “He has created an army who will no doubt pray for him, [and] they will also need his prayers to help them endure so great a loss. Atlanta and the world lost a great soul.”
Father Jacob is survived by his wife, Matushka Rebecca; daughters Brigitta Nicole and Gabrielle Elizabeth; grandson Solomon Grey Morris Myers; sister Marilyn Silver; and brother Albert Morris Myers.
Services will be celebrated at Saint John the Wonderworker Church.
Visitation will begin on Friday, January 25, at 3:00 p.m. At 7:00 p.m., the Funeral Service for a Priest will be celebrated. The Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, January 26, at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Those who wish to remain behind to participate in a meal being offered to the Loaves and Fishes men and women, in Father Jacob’s memory, are welcome to do so. Following interment, a reception will be held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
May Father Jacob’s memory be eternal!
