Sister Brigid [Savage], a Companion of New Skete, fell asleep in the Lord peacefully early in the morning of Thursday, November 5, 2015.
Sister Brigid had been residing at Wesley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center since the summer of 2013, suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. On the evening of her repose a group of her religious brothers and sisters from New Skete Monastery came and sang the Paschal music for her to accompany her on her final passage into eternal life.
Sister Brigid’s remaining family members include her son, Brother Christopher, who is a Priestmonk at New Skete; a sister, Evelyn; and a large group of nieces and nephews. Her husband Frank passed away at New Skete in 1997.
She was born Marcella Louise Murray on November 25, 1922, in Chicago, IL, where she spent most of her early years. She studied for several years at The Art Institute of Chicago. She was married in 1946 to Frank M. Savage and they spent 51 years together. She was very artistic and worked for many years as an interior decorator for Tomandl’s Interiors in Barrington, IL.
In 1987, with her husband’s retirement, the Savages relocated to Salem, NY to work on their dream of remodeling an old house. This took four years for them to accomplish.
In 1991, they joined the Companions of New Skete. Sister Brigid loved her life at New Skete. Through the years she was involved in baking dog biscuits, socializing puppies, gardening, cooking and preparing the guest rooms when Emmaus House focused on the ministry of hospitality. She loved the German Shepherds and cared for several during her time at New Skete. She was compassionate, filled with warmth, and had a very lovely smile.
Visitation and services will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, at New Skete. The Funeral Service will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 9, followed by interment in New Skete Cemetery.
May Sister Brigid’s memory be eternal!
