On the morning of Saturday, August 8, 2015, hundreds of pilgrims left Kodiak, AK by boat for Spruce Island, where His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon and Bishops David and Daniel concelebrated the Divine Liturgy at Saints Sergius and Valaam Chapel. The original log chapel was built in 1805, while the present structure dates to 1898. The chapel marks the burial site of Saint Herman, whose relics now are enshrined in Kodiak’s Holy Resurrection Cathedral. Pilgrims enjoyed a picnic lunch prepared by the women of Ouzinkie before returning to Kodiak for the celebration of Great Vespers at the cathedral.
On Sunday, August 9, the feast of Saint Herman, the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at the cathedral, after which a grand banquet and introduction of pilgrims will be held at the Afognak Native Corporation hall.
